The Faculty of Law on the Ourense campus hosted the conference Gender Parity and Balance in the Boards of Directors of Commercial Companies and in Top Business Management this Thursday. The session offered an in-depth analysis of the latest regulatory modifications introduced in Spanish law in this area and their effectiveness. In parallel, a session was held on immigration and gender from a legal perspective.
The conference on parity, funded by the Unidade de Igualdade da Universidade de Vigo, was led by Ana María Tobío, Professor of Commercial Law, and coordinated by Professor Roberto Couto. The event is part of the state research project Recent and pending legislative reforms in business contracting and competition: between digitalization and sustainability, led by the Universidad de Córdoba and in which UVigo participates.
The organization noted that gender parity in corporate governance is crucial for equal treatment and opportunities, improving business efficiency and ethics, in line with the Sustainable Development Goal of the Agenda 2030. An analysis was presented of Spanish regulatory modifications aimed at achieving a balanced gender presence in management and senior leadership bodies, evaluating the effectiveness of the current model and the need for new measures.
The European Union directive 2022/2381, known as the Women on Boards Directive, transposed in Spain by Organic Law 2/2024, or the Parity Law, was highlighted. These regulations, which also apply to listed companies and private entities of a certain size, impose binding rules with a rigorous sanctioning regime, representing a qualitative leap in implementing measures to promote parity.
The program included a conference by Adoración Pérez, titular professor of Commercial Law at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and member of the Comisión General de Codificación, on gender balance in boards of directors. This was followed by an intervention by María Ángeles Alcalá, Professor of Commercial Law at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha and also a member of the Comisión General de Codificación, on the selection procedure for directors after the Parity Law.
The second conference, Feminism and Theory of Law IV. Immigration and Gender: Stereotypes, Vulnerability, and Legal Reasoning, featured an intervention by Leticia María Delgado, titular professor at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid, who spoke about immigration and public policies with a gender perspective. This activity, organized by the AGAF group, was supported by the Unidade de Igualdade da UVigo, the Instituto Universitario de Investigación. Xustiza e Xénero (IXEX), and the Xunta de Galicia.
