Under the slogan “We bet on a conscious and sustainable future where you play a big part”, the local government of Soutomaior is asking for the involvement of citizens and large waste generators to improve separation rates and, consequently, reduce the treatment costs sent to Sogama. This initiative is part of the municipal strategy "Conscientes. Medra en verde".
The City Council points out that the treatment costs for non-recyclable waste have increased significantly, from 73 euros per ton in 2023 to 122 euros per ton this year, a 67% rise. New waste legislation mandates source separation and penalizes unsorted waste disposal. Treatment costs are only incurred for waste ending up in the "residual" (grey) bin, while glass, plastic, cardboard, and clothing are free when deposited separately.
The treatment cost per ton for each bin, excluding collection costs, is €0 for the blue (paper and cardboard), yellow (packaging, cans, and cartons), green (glass containers), orange (used cooking oil), textile (clothing and footwear), and composter/brown (organic matter, €58). The grey bin (other waste) costs €122 per ton.
Increased use of composting and recycling bins will reduce the tonnage in the "residual" bin, thereby lowering the bill the City Council pays to Sogama and helping to keep waste bills frozen for residents.
“"Every kilo we separate correctly is one kilo less that we pay at the highest price."
The Mayor of Soutomaior, Manu Lourenzo, emphasizes that the campaign aims to raise resident awareness about the importance of correct waste separation, both environmentally and economically. "Separating waste is an environmental responsibility, but it is also an economic decision. Every kilo we separate correctly is a kilo that does not end up in the grey bin and, therefore, one kilo less that we have to send for the most expensive treatment," he explained.
Furthermore, the City Council reminds citizens that incidents and notices related to municipal services can be reported via WhatsApp at 667 768 289, or through the QR code on the campaign's information leaflet. All information is available at www.conscientes.gal.
The campaign is co-financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund, FEDER Galicia Program 2021-2027), with the participation of the Xunta de Galicia and Xacobeo 2027.
