The Ziptie Motorsport team, composed of students from the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering at the University of Vigo's Ourense campus, successfully debuted their low-cost electric kart at the international HTL Zero Emission Challenge 2026 in Vienna, achieving a third-place finish in the static tests.

The vehicle, developed by the Ziptie Motorsport team—comprising four second-year students from the Aeronautical and Space Engineering degree at the University of Vigo and one student from IES Sánchez Cantón—competed in the Advanced category against 20 Austrian teams. The students highlighted that they were the only participants without specialized faculty guidance or a budget comparable to their competitors.
After passing the technical inspection, the electric kart secured third prize in the static tests and successfully completed the dynamic acceleration, slalom, and skid pad trials. In the endurance test, the vehicle recorded promising times, even leading on the final lap before a minor technical issue, which was later resolved, allowed the team to secure third place overall.
The project, initially conceived as a proposal to build an electric kart on a minimal budget, grew in complexity and evolved into a youth association. The prototype features a modified rental kart chassis, a stock 3 kW motor adapted to approximately 15 kW peak theoretical power with liquid cooling, a high-discharge battery, and an electronic speed controller, along with custom-designed and 3D-printed parts.
The initiative aims to foster interest in science and technology (STEM disciplines), promote practical learning, and encourage teamwork. The team expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the mayor of Ourense, Gonzalo Pérez Jácome, as well as several local hotels and businesses, in addition to the Xunta de Galicia and other entities.
