The exhibition Outro e sobre si, by Compostela-based artist Andrés Rodís, opened its doors at the Museo Gaiás, attended by the Director General of Culture, Anxo M. Lorenzo. This exhibition is the outcome of the first ArtLab IGFAE Residency, an initiative by the Xunta de Galicia and the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) aimed at strengthening the links between contemporary art and particle physics research at the Galician Institute of High Energy Physics (IGFAE).
Anxo M. Lorenzo highlighted the "stimulating dialogue" that Rodís establishes between concepts such as quantum superposition or Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and his artistic practice. According to the representative of the Consellería de Cultura, Lingua e Xuventude, these ideas, which represented a "breakthrough in our way of understanding reality," are questioned in Rodís's works, as he explores the "limits of the pictorial act and the work of art".
Also present at the opening were the Vice-Rector for Research and Open Science of the USC, Almudena Hospido; the director of the IGFAE, Carlos Salgado; the CEO of the Fundación Cidade da Cultura, Ana Isabel Vázquez; and the artist himself.
The exhibition comprises 25 pieces, including paintings, collages, digital prints, and a video projection, which delve into the potentiality of objects and the debates surrounding signal-to-noise ratio and the importance of measurement. Andrés Rodís has created abstractions that combine the pictorial object with the material conditions of the studio, such as falling paint or eroded cement, used as pigment.
The ArtLab IGFAE Residency allowed Rodís to immerse himself in the facilities of the IGFAE, converse with researchers, and incorporate gamma and tomographic scans into his works. Subsequently, at the Cidade da Cultura, he shaped the pieces that are now on display.
The Director General of Culture emphasized the significance of this combined residency as "a pioneering initiative in opening dialogue between science and art." He recalled that the application period for the second edition is now open, with the aim of "broadening the public's perception of the research carried out at the Universidade de Santiago and expanding the creative horizons of the Galician artistic sector".
The exhibition will be open to the public until January 10, 2027, on the first floor of the Museo Centro Gaiás, with free admission. Additionally, this afternoon at 7:00 PM, the artist will participate in an open conversation about the project at the Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías, on the Campus Vida of the USC.
