The head of Environment and Climate Change, Nicolás Vázquez Iglesias, accompanied by the territorial delegate of the Xunta in Pontevedra, Pablo Fernández, emphasized the continuous work of Augas de Galicia to guarantee river conservation and anticipate the effects of climate change. The visit focused on the actions being carried out on the Tomeza River, in Vilaboa.
The minister stated that these tasks have a triple objective: to reduce flood risks, promote river connectivity, and conserve ecosystems. On the Tomeza River, the work covers 4.7 kilometers, of which 3.9 run through Vilaboa and the remaining 800 meters through the Concello de Pontevedra. The aim is to improve the riverbed's condition, both hydraulically and environmentally, facilitate water circulation, correct erosion problems, and eliminate invasive exotic species.
He explained that a first phase of removing fallen trees and obstacles has already been completed, which helps reduce the risk of flooding. Currently, a second phase is being executed with bioengineering works, such as the construction of krainer walls, wooden structures designed to stabilize riverbanks and contain erosion.
“"This action does not consist only of cleaning the river, but rather it restores it, improves its hydraulic capacity, and reinforces the conservation of the river ecosystem."
River maintenance is crucial to prevent overflows during intense rainfall and to ensure water circulation in times of scarcity. In this regard, Vázquez Iglesias called for rational and responsible water use, highlighting that the activation of prolonged drought measures allows municipalities to better manage their water resources.
