Blood extractions for invited participants in this new stage of the project began today, October 26, 2026, at the Hospital Público de O Salnés and will continue until next Thursday, October 29. The schedule for sample collection will be from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, with prior appointment and no fasting required. During the process, healthcare personnel will inform participants about the various aspects of the research study.
In the healthcare district of Pontevedra, sample collection will take place at the Hospital Público de Montecelo between November 2 and 19, during the same hours. The Xunta has sent 2,858 invitations for this new phase, with 702 corresponding to the Salnés district and 2,156 to Pontevedra, aiming to achieve the participation of 571 people in the Salnés area and 431 in Pontevedra.
The Xenoma Galicia project has an investment of 20 million euros from the Xunta and aims to collect DNA from 400,000 Galicians to identify genes related to conditions such as hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, and familial hypercholesterolemia. To date, 3,112 biological samples have been analyzed, including pilot studies and the first phase of the project, which have led to the detection of 25 new positive cases for the screened conditions.
Coordinated by the Consellería de Sanidade and under the direction of researchers from the Fundación Pública Galega de Medicina Xenómica, María Brión and Ángel Carracedo, the project seeks to design new prevention and early detection programs, as well as establish the foundations for sustainable and equitable genetic screening.
