The farm received a diploma at the first ExceRazas awards, organized by the Consellería do Medio Rural, in the Legacy and Vigor category, for its trajectory in breed preservation, notably with 11 cows over 15 years old and more than 12 calvings.
Belén do Campo highlighted the commitment of breeders who help maintain Galicia's genetic diversity and history, stating that the recognition of María del Carmen del Río also honors the effort of all professionals keeping this livestock heritage alive. The farm currently has 23 adult cows and spans 37 hectares.
The ExceRazas awards, held on October 22nd, recognize the professionalism of breeders of Galicia's five endangered native bovine breeds: Cachena, Caldelá, Frieiresa, Limiá, and Vianesa, in categories such as livestock excellence, legacy and vigor, and breed identity and seed.
The Xunta de Galicia maintains support programs for the conservation of these breeds, with a budget of 270,000 euros in grants for breeder associations in 2026, in addition to specific aid for endangered ruminant recría and a collaboration agreement with BOAGA worth over 1.06 million euros.
The delegate also emphasized the contribution of these animals to landscape conservation and sustainable land management, aiding in forest fire prevention. She concluded by stating that supporting these breeds means supporting employment, the economy, and rural life, while preserving Galician identity.
