The Silleda City Council has renewed, for the third consecutive year, the Galicia Green Flag Award, a distinction granted by the Xunta de Galicia to municipalities that stand out for their environmental good practices.

The Mayoress of Silleda, Paula Fernández Pena, collected this distinction yesterday at the institutional event held at the Pazo de Santa Cruz de Rivadulla, in the municipality of Vedra. She was accompanied by the Councillor for Ecological Transition, Manuel Requeijo, and the Deputy Mayoress, Mónica González. With this new award, Silleda consolidates a trajectory initiated in 2024, becoming one of the 5 municipalities in the province of Pontevedra to obtain the seal this year.
Paula Fernández highlighted the importance of maintaining this recognition for three consecutive years, stating that "it shows that our commitment to sustainability is not based on isolated actions, but on a way of understanding municipal management, in which environmental protection and the improvement of residents' quality of life must go hand in hand." She also emphasized the responsibility to "conserve this wealth and, at the same time, promote a development model that is respectful of the territory and future generations."
The renewal of the Green Flag continues the work developed by the City Council in various areas of environmental management. Initiatives include the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), the Climate Action and Sustainable Energy Plan (PACES), the Biomass Heating Network project, and waste management, where Silleda pioneered the brown bin for organic waste and domestic composting in the region.
The Councillor for Ecological Transition, Manuel Requeijo, stated that "this third Green Flag is the result of continuous work over time, combining planning, investments, and concrete measures to make Silleda an increasingly sustainable municipality." He added that "sustainability is also built day by day, by improving waste separation, promoting energy saving, encouraging composting, or raising awareness about the importance of caring for our environment."
The awarding of the Galicia Green Flag also serves as an incentive to continue developing new initiatives and is a merit when applying for certain regional grants related to the protection of natural heritage and municipal waste management. The Mayoress recalled that the Silleda City Council has been making significant investments with its own funds to improve water supply and sanitation infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
In this edition, a total of 39 Galician municipalities received the Green Flag, of which only five are in the province of Pontevedra. The Xunta plans to prioritize municipalities recognized with this distinction for access to future aid lines, including those related to water management.
