The Salón Teatro in Santiago de Compostela will host on Tuesday, October 27, the premiere of the documentary O legado dunha mestra galega en Cuba. O poder de educar, dedicated to the teacher from Mondoñedo Andrea López Chao.

The audiovisual piece, directed by Violeta Ramos and Daniel Vázquez Vila, is promoted by the Mondoñedo Council, with the support of the Xunta de Galicia, aiming to recover the memory and value the trajectory of this Galician woman. Andrea López Chao participated in the I National Congress of Cuban Women in 1923 and was a pioneering voice in defending women's rights in the transatlantic sphere.
The municipality of Mondoñedo thus continues its tribute to López Chao, which began in 2022 with the placement of a plaque in the Parque da Lembranza and the dedication of a street last year. The Neira Vilas Chair of Galician Language and Literature at the University of Havana also holds annual events to delve into the contribution of Galician women in Cuba.
Andrea López Chao moved to Cuba in the early 20th century to oversee the education provided by the Centro Galego to emigrant Galicians. She stood out for her social commitment and participation in historical feminist initiatives, motivated by the lack of healthcare and social attention for vulnerable Galician women at the hospital Hijas de Galicia-Concepción Arenal, considered the largest care initiative for emigrant women worldwide.
