The Mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, received a representation of the cultural association Xacarandaina this Tuesday, October 27th, to congratulate them on their world runner-up achievement at the FIDAF Brazil 2026 World Championship.

The A Coruña-based group, directed by Quique Peón, secured second place in the most closely contested final in the event's history, held as part of the 22nd edition of the Nova Prata International Folklore Festival in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. They competed against the Bulgarian group Sofía 6.
The jury acknowledged the complexity and closeness of the final decision, while Xacarandaina also won awards for best international couple dance and best costume. The mayor highlighted the entity's work in the "research, conservation, and dissemination of traditional Galician music and dance" for nearly half a century.
“

"Xacarandaina is one of the great cultural references of A Coruña and Galicia. Its international success is also a success for our city, because behind this recognition are decades of rigorous work, commitment to popular culture, and love for the heritage that defines us as a people."

Inés Rey · Mayor of A Coruña
Rey emphasized Xacarandaina's ability to bring Galician culture to major international stages, stating that it "represents the best of our culture: tradition, excellence, and a vision for the future."
This result comes during the collective's first transatlantic tour, which involved an expedition of 29 people to Brazil with the support of the City Council. Throughout its history, Xacarandaina has documented and preserved over 500 traditional dances and participated in more than 150 festivals.
