The intervention, which will take place throughout the coming week, will consist of raising a natural sand barrier of more than two meters in height. This structure will be located in the intermediate area of the beach, maintaining a safety distance from the Promenade.
The mayor, Inés Rey, highlighted the importance of this measure for the "conservation of municipal infrastructure and the prevention of damage that adverse meteorological phenomena can cause". This action is part of the usual maintenance and coastal protection tasks carried out by the Council.
The work will be carried out with specialized machinery that will move and accumulate sand from the shoreline towards the area near the promenade wall. Subsequently, operators will model and compact the sediment to form a stable slope-like structure, capable of absorbing part of the wave energy.
Municipal technical services will carry out continuous monitoring of the dune's condition to assess its evolution and determine if reinforcements are necessary based on meteorological and maritime conditions.
This soft engineering technique, used since 1995 after a storm damaged the old Promenade, has become a protection measure against Atlantic storms. It allows the beach's own sand to be used to create a temporary defense against waves, being a reversible intervention that balances winter protection with summer public use.
The dune will remain installed until mid-May 2027, when the Council will proceed with its removal to restore the usual configuration of the beach and prepare it for the start of the bathing season, scheduled for June 15. This intervention is part of the conservation and maintenance work on public spaces and the maritime facade.
